CHARACTER STUFF
Name: Jean-Michel Delorme
Aliases: Patina
Canon: N/A
Role: Superhero
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Appearance: Moderately tall, a hair under six feet. Light brown hair, in a fairly nondescript short cut. Broad facial features—wide cheekbones and nasal bridge, dark eyes set moderately far apart. As a hero he wears a dark blue costume made out of some kind of sleek material and a mask that covers his eyes and hair—his nose and mouth remain free.

Origin story: Jean-Luc has skating since he was a young child, and has for the past five years or so been competing as a pairs skater. Formerly he lived and trained in Canada, as a native Manitoban—but last year his former partner had a career ending injury, and he has found a new match in an American skater, based out of LA. They are sitting out this competitive season, as they are not yet sure which country they plan to compete for, but train regularly together and have an excellent rapport.
Being in LA also allows him the opportunity to further connect with the superhuman community. Growing up in rural Manitoba, he learned fairly young of his unusual abilities, but kept them secret; already a target at school due to being Indigenous and a skater, he wasn't anxious to display any more obvious types of difference from his peers. Part of the reason he chose to team up with his current skating partner, as opposed to someone located closer to his familiar home, is so that he could get a fresh start, and pursue a part of his life it's been getting harder to ignore as his powers grow in strength.
Being involved with other young heroes has benefited him in another way—he until recently was dating another young man, part of the West Coast Trailblazers. They parted under slightly tense circumstances—Jean-Michel is not able to publicly be out as a civilian, due to entrenched bias in the sports community, and that was a rift his boyfriend was unable to deal with—but the experience still has left Jean-Michel invigorated, as yet another part of himself he was unable to explore before moving to America. Overall he is feeling good about his life, even if he does miss his family back home, and regret having to keep his orientation a secret to all but the people he trusts most when he isn't in costume.
Personality: Jean-Michel is inherently a trusting, open person; he's quick to make jokes and disarmingly straightforward. This, unfortunately, causes some friction with the secrets he keeps out of necessity—his heroic identity, his sexual orientation. The struggle between his inherent nature and the reality of his situation leads to him being grumpy or snappish when pressed about things he can't answer, though he always regrets his behaviour afterwards. He's reasonably bright, but graduated high school with only average marks—athletic practice and competition kept him from devoting more time to schoolwork. He's incredibly passionate about his sport, but also about helping people—if he had to give up either skating or being a hero, the decision is one he would agonize over. He blames himself for his former partner's injury, and his current skating partnership is developing slowly because of it—he trusts his new partner, but doesn't trust himself not to accidentally hurt her on a throw or other element gone wrong.

First person sample: Friday, January 10th, 2014 Practice was good today. Had to be cut short because Jen had homework. It still feels weird to not be in school but I guess I'll get used to it. Working on our throws again. I keep fucking up the entry, I guess I'm still nervous about

Anyway. We got a clean one in so that's progress. She hugged me REALLY tight after, I'm not sure if she's getting used to me being gay or if she's trying to like, turn me straight with contact. Gonna need to talk to her about that at some point, ugh. Kill me.

Canadian nats started today. If I'm talking about feeling weird (when do I talk about anything in here except feeling weird), that's got me some kind of messed up. A year ago I was there with Marietta, and now I'm in California and it doesn't even feel like winter. US nats are this weekend too, but obviously Jen and I aren't eligible for those either. Maybe next year I'll actually know what the hell we're doing for competitions. Maybe next year I'll have another boyfriend. You never know, right?

Gotta go do the street patrol thing now. Keeping the city safe from evil, haha. Hopefully I'll be able to distract myself with one of those team aqua weirdos.

Prose sample: Jean-Michel closed his journal and slipped it back into his drawer, sighing as he did so. The last time he'd missed Nationals was when he and Marietta failed to qualify for Juniors the year he turned fifteen. Before this year, if you'd asked him, he'd have said he didn't care about competition so long as he could skate, but now...being on the sidelines was driving him up the wall.
Well, at least he had his night job. He went over to the wardrobe and pulled it open, casting a cursory glance over the contents. One advantage to being a figure skater—a lot easier to hide a hero suit amongst other flashy costumes than in with regular clothes. He and Jen didn't have anything ready to be costumed yet, but he kept all of his old costumes from performing with Marietta—they reminded him of home, along with the medal he kept from the one time they hit the podium as juniors. That wasn't what he was here for right now, though. He pushed them aside and pulled out a different costume, blue and streamlined, from near the back of the wardrobe.
As he pulled it on he tried to shift his mindset away from skating and toward what he'd mentally begun referring to as Comic Book Bullshit. As much as he enjoyed doing this, it still felt ridiculous, like someone else's life. Hopefully he'd get over that with time. Maybe around the same time I stop feeling so fucked up about Mari's injury...ha. ha. He finished off with the mask and took a quick glance in the mirror—he looked ridiculous, he thought, but also unrecognizable, and that was what he was still prioritizing. One day he'd stop keeping secrets, but for now...
Grumbling to himself, he dropped out his window and started up the police scanner app on his phone, slipping in an earbud and beginning his patrol.
